Visual Story Open House Europe. It emerges as an ambitious pan-European photographic documentation project, capturing the architectural diversity and cultural richness of cities across the continent. Coordinating photographers from multiple countries, the initiative aims to create a comprehensive visual narrative of urban spaces during architectural open days. This story was created during Open House BCN 2024 on the theme of accessibility and inclusion and published on the Open House Europe website.
"There are still many contradictions with respect to accessibility and inclusion in most buildings. Efforts are being made to make them more accessible, but many fail to be ‘exitible’. Are they safe in case of emergency for people with reduced mobility? This visual story highlights this contradiction. Although ramps facilitate entry, stairs remain the fastest route out (and speed is critical). Fortunately, progress is evident in some forward-thinking buildings, where designated safe refuge areas are now available to safeguard wheelchair users in emergencies. Happy End? Not quite yet, but we’re moving in the right direction."
